Timmonsville Mayor Speaks Out Against Recent Gun Violence

Timmonsville Mayor Darrick Jackson responds to the five people shot, two of which fatally, since October 5th. ABC 15 News covers his statement: "I wanted to take a few moments to sit and address the recent shootings in Timmonsville. Let me start by saying that my thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who were lost. Any loss of life is a tragedy and those who are left behind have to be given the support they need from their families, loved ones and the community at large. Timmonsville is a small town that has always been a symbol of what is a small-town community in the United States should be. This is a community of caring people who have survived because of the love they have for each other and this little spot on the planet we called Timmonsville.

The rash of recent gun violence in our town has been disheartening and disturbing, to say the least, but we all need to face him uncomfortable truths. Gun violence is a systematic problem in the United States, and the town of Timmonsville is the only latest town to be affected by it. We all want to live in cities and towns that are safe, and this is why I became the first mayor in the state of South Carolina to join the Mayors Against Illegal Guns Coalition back in 2012.”
