Attorney General Sues City of Columbia Over Gun Violence Prevention Measures

South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson announced Wednesday that he is suing the City of Columbia over Gun Violence Prevention measures passed last December. The new city ordinances would allow the Columbia municipal court to grant "Extreme Risk Protection Orders," make it illegal to possess a gun within 1,000ft of a school, and prohibit homemade firearms with no serial number, or "ghost guns."

Extreme Risk Protection Orders, also known as "Red Flag Laws" would allow police or family members to request that the guns of an individual found a threat to suicide or a threat to commit violence against others be removed.

Wilson claims that the ordinances violate state law denying local governments to regulate firearms as well as the Second Amendment.

Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin stated that he had not read the lawsuit and would only comment after he had done so.
